Hate your leaky basement?
A sump pump may be the first line of defense against water getting into the basement.
Definition>
Sump pump is a pump used for removing water from places which water must be away.Water flooding occurs due to :
- Basement is below the water table level.
- Water funneling into the basin because of rain or natural ground water.
- Water enters via the perimeter drains of a basement waterproofing system.
Sump pump components
Modern sump pump components in the United States are standardized.
Sump basin may be formed from plastic, concrete or metal, approximately 2 feet (0.6 m) across and 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 1 m) deep, 15 to 25 U.S. gallons (60 to 100 liter) capacity.
A sump pump is either 1/3 or 1/2 horsepower (200 or 400 W).Either battery, electrically powered or both.
Sump pump usage:
Sump pumps are installed where basement flooding occurs regularly and to remedy dampness where the water table is above the foundation of a home.
Types of Sump pumps
(1) – Pedestal sump pump :
The pedestal sump pump's motor is mounted above the sump sump.It is more easily serviced, but is also more conspicuous.
The sump pump impeller is designed to be driven by a long, vertical extension shaft and the impeller is in a scroll housing in the base of the pump.(See the next figure).
(2) – Submersible sump pump:
The Submersible sump pump’s motor is mounted inside the sump. The motor is specially sealed to prevent electrical short circuits.
Sump pump backup system
As the primary sump pump depends in its operation on electricity, the sump basin may overflow if the electrical power is not supplied . A sump pump back up system is required to avoid the flooding due to the absence of electricity.
Sump pump backup system is also necessary when :
- Sump pump can’t deal with the higher amounts of water.
- Failure of primary sump pump check valve.
- Failure of float switch.
- Freezing of the discharge pipe.
Remember that, the biggest damage occurs when water is flooding in the absence of electricity.
For sump pumps, there many back up systems:
Battery back up sump pump (battery powered).
Water powered sump pump.
Other applications
Sump pump systems are also used in commercial and industrial applications. It is used to control water table-related problems in surface soil.Periodic high water table situation causes the ground to become unstable because of water saturation. As long as the sump pump is in service, the surface soil remains stable.
These sump sumps are :
- Ten feet in depth or more.
- Lined with corrugated metal pipe which includes perforations or drain holes throughout.
- Including electronic control systems with visual and audible alarms .
